People's Democratic Republic of Yemen: Children well cared for
Happy children can be met everywhere in the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen today. Some of these girls from Aden shown here festively dressed take part in a cultural pupils' programme.
In 1963, the year when the country gained its independence, there existed only a dozen schools. The revolution ended the privilege of education for the rich. Today, over 70 per cent of all children at school age attend school.
In Aden, far over 3,000 girls and boys are presently cared for in kindergartens. Construction works are in full swing everywhere in the country and in the capital (some 250,000 inhabitants in 1981). More than 2,000 people have got new flats in Mansura, a quarter of Aden, within the past two years. Further 7,000 citizens will be provided with new flats after the completion of the new dwelling quarters.
Modern department stores were also built. A central children's hospital with over 360 beds is presently constructed with the help of the Soviet Union.
