Millions of baseball fans in the United States were marveling at the sensational all-round play of the star centerfielder of the New York Giants professional team, the 23 year-old Willie Mays. Despite his youth and short term in a major baseball league, Willie was already being compared with some of the all-time stars of the game.
Mays (bat in hand) had just hit a hard line drive. This scene took place in the fall of 1952 when the New York Giants, winners of the National League, played the New York Yankees, winners of the American League, for the World Championship. Yogi Berra, catcher of the Yankees can be seen at the left.
During the 1954 season Mays had hit close to 40 home runs by early August. Many fans thought that he might exceed Babe Ruth's astounding record of 60 home runs in one season.
