A watcher, Welikalage Paul Perera (60) of Kelaniya, was found buried under a heap of about 1000 bags of sea sand yesterday morning at the building site of the new Overseas Telecommunication Services office in Colombo Fort. Perera was missing yesterday morning when the other workers reported for work. Only his push bicycle was in the premises.
A search was made. Suspecting that he may have been buried under the bags of sea sand that were found fallen from a pile of about 10,000 bags which had been placed to test the strength of the newly laid foundation, the fallen bags were cleared and Perera's body was found crushed to death.
The Fort Police believe that the man was asleep beside the pile of bags when some of them fell on him. Picture shows the scene of the incident. Perera's body lies covered in the foreground.
