Orbital flights conducted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration are part of a long-range program aimed at manned flights to the moon and back to earth by the end of this decade. Astronauts in the program trained rigorously for years while thousands of scientists and technicians gave maximum support to their efforts. A new group of astronauts will begin training in late 1962 for the two-man Gemini spacecraft which is now being built.
Navy Commander Walter M. Schirra, 39, is a 1945 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Air Medals for service with United Nations forces in Korea. A test pilot for four years before becoming an astronaut, he has logged 3,200 hours of flying time, including 2,000 hours in jet airplanes.
