Scope and content
Survivors embraced each other recently on the ground where earlier a 300-ft. high tidal wave gushed from the Vajont Dam and into the River Piave Valley, wiping out half a dozen villages including Longarone and killing more than 4000 people. So far 300 bodies have been recovered. The Vajont Dam, reportedly the highest arch dam in the world, partially gave way under the pressure of swollen peak waters from heavy rains.
