The photograph made at the convention in Washington D.C. shows the Secretary Acheson (left) conversing with Mrs. Edith Sampson (center), U.S. alternate delegate to the United Nations General Assembly, and Mrs. Mary McLeod Bethune, founder of the Council.
At the meeting, commemorating the fifth anniversary of the United Nations, Secretary Acheson told the council members that "three great principles have always been the basis of United States policy: Freedom from aggression, freedom from poverty and disease, and freedom of the individual, that is, that human rights be strengthened."
