Scope and content

Here are two of the six wagons of the Trincomalee-Batticaloa mail train which ran off the rail just outside Polgahawela railway station yesterday morning. (As reported in our Late Edition yesterday).
Over 100 passengers jumped out of the compartments in panic when the wagons jumped the rails. The guard, Mr. D.M. Illankoon, the only person injured, was taken to the Polgahawela hospital.
Workers cleared the track after four hours. Because of the mishap the "Yal Devi" to Jaffna was delayed by three hours. Mr. P. Rajagopal, Chief Mechanical Engineer, CGR, held an on-the-spot inquiry.
Mr. M.M. Grieve, Commercial Superintendent of Railways, also held an inquiry.
