While the workmen of the Electrical Department of the River Valley Development Board, (Gal Oya) were engaged in cutting down a gigantic banyan tree at the Town Square on the Main Street, Akkaraipattu. The large tree with its massive weight came crashing down destroying a row of four shops. The shops, with all the furniture in them were reduced to match-wood.
Picture shows, the crane at work clearing the heavy branches of the fallen tree and the men clearing debris. People rushed to see whether any lives were lost under the crashed buildings. But luckily, except the workmen who were on the top of the tree cutting down branches, none were injured. The road was blocked for almost the whole day.
