300 miners lost their lives and more than 80 are in hospital, many of them seriously hurt in an explosion at the Luisenthal coal mine at Voelklingen, Saar. The Luisenthal mine had been famous for its safety record but the is one of the worst in the history of German Mining. Picture shows ambulance from all parts of the Saar run a shuttle service as rescue squads bring out the casualties.
