May 1969
On December 21, 1963 the United States launched the Apollo space craft to orbit the moon. The astronauts had two prime objectives -- to go into lunar orbit, and to take photographs of the best possible landing sites for men to set a spacecraft down on the surface of the moon. Their mission was successful.
On February 28, 1969 the Saturn V launched Apollo 9 into earth orbit to flight test for the first time the lunar mobile, the spacecraft which is to land two men on the moon. Their mission was successful.
On May 18, 1969 the United States will launch Apollo 10 to orbit the moon, descend in the lunar mobile to within 55,000 feet of the lunar surface while the CSM remains in lunar orbit. One of their prime missions will be to photograph from this distance another landing site for the next flight in July which will lead two men on the moon.
The three astronauts of Apollo 10, Thomas P. Stafford, John W. Young and Eugene A. Cernan will combine their experience with that of previous flights to insure a successful landing for two Americans of the Apollo 11 mission.
