Seven members of the crew lost their lives when the South Goodwin lightship dragged her morrings and drifted on to the notorious Goodwin Sands off the Kentish coast of England. The vessel struck the sands and turned over on her side during the heavy week-end gale. One man was saved by a U.S. Air Force helicopter. He was Mr. Ronald Murton, a young scientist from the Min. of Agriculture, who was aboard the vessel to observe bird migration.
