Scope and content
Seven dead in British Lightship Disaster.
Seven members of the crew lost their lives when the South Goodwin lightship dragged her moorings and drifted on to the notorious Goodwin Sands off the Kent coast of England. The vessel struck the sands and turned over on her side during the heavy weekend gales. Only one man was saved — by a U.S. Air Force helicopter. He was Mr. Ronald Murton, a young scientist from the Min. of Agriculture, who was on board to observe bird migration.
PHOTO SHOWS: A picture taken from the helicopter as Murton clad only in pyjamas and overcoat, grabs the rescue cable, after clinging to the rail of the ship throughout the night.
