Scope and content
Sportswoman of the week is Sophia Marasinghe, who led Dia Shirts Co. team to victory in the Mercantile knock-out competition to retain Xavier Roche Memorial Cup for another year.
This shy and unassuming 13-year-old lass could be ranked as one of the best netball players in the country.
A versatile player, who plays with dexterity and skill in any position, Sophia is a product of Minuwangoda Central and represented the school team from 1953 to 1957, captaining the side in the last year in the Westrop Shield.
In 1959, she made her debut in Mercantile League Netball, playing for Hentleys, who finished runners-up to Air Ceylon.
Last year, Sophia joined Dia Shirts Co. and with her experience and skill helped to build up a formidable side. And last year Dia were runners-up in the league and went on to win the knock-out championship—their first Mercantile title.
But, says Sophia, the success of the Dia team is mainly due to the enthusiasm shown by the girls and their keenness to learn and train hard.
She, however, said that their success is to a great extent was due to encouragement and the interest taken by the managing director of Dia Shirts Co., Mr. W. F. Fonseka.
She also paid tribute to the boys in the firm, who spent their evening and helped them in their practices. According to Sophia, it was playing with the boys that enables them to through their strenuous training sessions, and this helped them to play hard in their tournament games.
And this year, Dia again missed the 'double'—being runners-up in the league but made sure of the knock-out championship.
And now the Dia girls are training for the floodlit tournament.
Sophia played against the Australian Crusaders in 1958 and 1959, representing the Netball Association of Ceylon, the Colombo netball Club and the Mercantile teams.
Sophia is also interested in Badminton and Table Tennis.
