Eight ski-ers, five of them from the Paris Alpine Club, including M. Jean Maurin, chef de Cabinet to M. Jeanneney, President of the French Senate, were killed when they were buried in an avalanche on the Grand Galibier, near Grenoble, France. A ninth member of the party remained on the surface of the snow, and seeing no trace of his companions, set out for help. Three search parties - comprising more than 60 civilians and two detachments of Chasseurs Alpins - were mistered to recover the bodies.
