Among the 25 passengers aboard a 4-ton pleasure boat which set out from Izu Beach, Japan, for a tour of the bay recently, was three-year -old Mitsu Nakahira, who was wearing a new pair of sandals which her parents had just bought her. The sandals hurt her, so she took them off and dropped the one that hurt her most into the sea. Her parents, assisted by many other passengers in the launch, made a frantic but futile rush to the side to try and fish out the sandal from the sea. The sudden rush capsized the launch and threw everyone into the water. Fortunately there were boats nearby and tragedy was averted—but Mitsu's sandal was not recovered. Picture shows the sinking launch is pushed by volunteers into shallow water so that it can be salvaged. The launch sank off the point seen in background, a spot where the Izu Bay is deepest.
