Seruwila Mangala Chetiya where the week-long Buddha Jayanthi celebrations began yesterday. Celebrations are also being held at Dighavan and at Nagadipa. The Seruwila Chetiya was in ruins when it was discovered in 1923. Through the efforts of the Seruwila Chetiya Restoration Society the dagoba was renovated and the pinnacle laid in 1936. Though access to the shrine is not easy – the devotees having to cross many ferries and walk along the jungle paths – yet it is a favourite place of worship among Buddhists, who believe that the Buddha sanctified the place by his presence during one of his visits to Ceylon.
