Scope and content
Young Mike Sangster entered the semi-finals by erasing Iyo Pimentel, a lackadaisical Venezuelan, in fifty-six minutes, winning 6—2, 6—2, 6—4. Mike Sangster's win was so overwhelming that it is hard to describe. It was certainly one of the most one-sided matches ever seen at the quarter-final stage at Wimbledon. Sangster, serving tolerably and at least getting his volleys over, scarcely had to run at all. But the really astonishing thing was the complete air of disinterest, with which the Venezuelan seemed to accept the way that the score mounted against him. Sangster, at twenty-one, thus becomes the first Englishman to reach the semi-finals since Bunny Austin did so in 1938.
PS: Mike Sangster.....first Englishman to reach the last four at Wimbledon since Bunny Austin in 1938.
