S.M. Ramakill, the marathon cyclist, rode his bicycle non-stop from 10 a.m. on June 4th to 4.30 p.m. on June 7th — a period of 102½ hours — around the Sunday Fair grounds at Bandarawela, in connection with the annual Vel festival conducted by the Sri Siva Subramaniam Hindu Kovil.
Ramakill took no food during this period, except liquids. He changed clothes, danced, bathed, shaved and performed acrobatic feats while riding backwards.
He received gifts valued at Rs. 5,000 from the chairman of the Bandarawela Urban Councio, the former chairman, Mr. S.M. Nadarajah and several others.
Ramakill was garlanded and conducted in procession through the town.
