The rioters killed a French gendarme and forced visiting French President Charles De Gaulle to cancel a scheduled open-air speech.
Gun-toting foreign legionaires and infantry units hurled tear gas and thunder flash grenades to clear more than 2,000 rioters from Djibouti's main square only minutes before De Gaulle was due to speak.
The rioters are demanding immediate independence from France. There demonstrations began with De Gaulle's arrival here last night and increased in intensity throughout the day.
