Thirty passengers were injured - three of them seriously - when an express double decker bus from panadura ran off the road into the Methodist College Premises at kollupitiya. The three passengers in a serious condition were M.Y.M Muthamy, M. Seyadu Khan and S.K.M Meena Mohamed all of Panadura. The bus packed with office workers crashed through the parapet wall and went down an incline and fell on its side a few feet away from the church. The Rev. A.H Cooper minister in charge of the church was the first on the scene and helped to extricate trapped passengers. The glass shutters had to be smashed to pull out passengers in the lower deck. A number of Methodist college students who were playing in the compound had a narrow escape. The driver of the bus who was unhurt told the police that the steering wheel had locked and he had lost control of the bus. The injured among whom were two pregnant women were rushed to hospital in passing cars.
