Scope and content
Left to right: (1) Piyadasa, the 21-year-old ferryman, (2) Hendrick Singho with his son — the only surviving child of his family. Two of his daughters were drowned. Two other daughters had died of illness recently. Note the boil on the boy's back which kept him away from school —and saved his life. (3) The 74-year-old woman who sat on the bank of the Kalu Ganga and wailed: "Come back to me, little son!" at her home last night. She is the mother of Malbinduwa, who was drowned while rescuing children in the Kalu Ganga tragedy. (4) The father of Sita hugging his daughter after she was rescued by a passenger (at right) on the ill-fated boat.
