R. W. Barber, the Cambridge double 'Blue' had captained Lancashire for two seasons. He was born on September 26th, 1935. A left-hand opening batsman when he first played for the country, he bowled leg-breaks and googlies.
He played for England in his first Test against South Africa in 1960. He was also a member of the MCC team to New Zealand in 1960/61. A talented all-rounder, he scored 1,104 runs in all first-class matches in 1959. He was expected to be a success on tour where his bowling, if he were to strike form, would be of great value to the team.
Of a modest disposition, Barber had not bowled sufficiently when captaining the country. On this score, he had been relieved of the cares of Lancashire's captaining the following season. The country authorities were confident he would be a much more successful cricketer, especially as a bowler, with the change.
