Scope and content
Malawi Premier Dr. Hastings Banda is pictured here being sworn in as the country's first President, by the Chief Justice, when Malawi became a Republic within the Commonwealth.
The cutting of the direct link with the British Crown --a link now retained only by Gambia and Sierra Leone among African Commonwealth nations --sets a seal on the absolute authority of Malawi's first Premier and now first President, Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda.
For though Malawi remains a parliamentary democracy, it is a one-party state with Dr. Banda in firm and direct control. --(UPI)
