Scope and content

455 Ethiopians at the age between 15 and 75 learn to read and write at the "Hizbawi-Serawit School of Addis Ababa at present. Some 5.5 million people wanted to participate in the 2nd alphabetization phase, which began in the end of 1979. Lessons are given in almost 35,000 teaching centres by more than 240,000 teachers - among them many voluntary helpers of the most different vocations-. 95 out of 100 Ethiopians could not read nor write, when the feudal-bourgeois system was overthrown five years ago. As early as some month later, the new revolutionary regime began with a country-wide alphabetization campaign. Since that time, several millions of adult people have gained basic knowledge.
