Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia: Armed with a submachine gun, a policeman (right) chases after rioting Africans who constructed this roadblock during the rioting in the African township of high field here last night.
The Africans were shot dead and a third wounded when police opened fire on crowds. The riots occurred after the failure of a strike called to coincide with the court appearance of African nationalist leader Joshua Nkombo at Umtali. Nkombo was sentenced to six months imprisonment for making statements in a speech likely to cause hostility towards the police. Three months of the sentence was suspended provided Nkombo is not convicted in the next three years of committing an offence under the law and order (maintenance) act. He was allowed bail of £100 pending his appeal.
