Terraced Fields in the High Mountains

The Attaf settlement is situated in the stony landscape of the Yaffei Mountains. The terraced fields in foreground, which were built by Yemenite peasants in painful work, have to be regularly watered in order to gain yields.

The People's Democratic Republic of Yemen is one of the hottest areas on the earth and is very poop in vegetations. The landscape of most of the country is characterised iby stony and rocky formations. Four fifth of the cultivated land of the country are to be artificially watered, for only a few kinds of grass and bushes a growing here without permanent cultivation by men. Only a little more than one per cent of the some 300,000 square kilometres of the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen are cultivable.
