Scope and content
Wellington, New Zealand: For these passengers the worst is over as a packed lifeboat is hauled ashore at Wellington harbor after the British-built ferry Wahine, 8,944-tons, had been driven on to treacherous Barretts Reef by hurricane winds and then capsized. Most of the 744 passengers and crew jumped into gale-lashed seas, with mothers clutching their children wrapped in life-jackets. At least 65 are known to have been drowned, but is feared the death toll may be as high as 150.
