Flashback: The Apollo-11 crewmen hold their first press conference August 12, 1969, after leaving quarantine at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Texas. Commander Neil Armstrong (center), the first man to step on the Moon, called the entire mission "the beginning of a new age." Edwin Aldrin (left), the second lunar walker, said the success of the undertaking shows the way to solving other problems on earth. Michael Collins, (right), who remained in the command ship in lunar orbit, noted that "for the first time man has the flexibility, the option, of either walking on this planet or on some other planet."
