Apollo-11 commander Neil Armstrong shakes hands with Secretary-General U. Thant after presenting to him a replica of the plaque left on the Moon. The ceremony took place recently at United Nations Headquarters in New York City.
With Armstrong are Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin and their wives and children. Behind U. Thant is Mayor John Lindsay.
The Secretary-General greeted the space heroes as "these valiant men who have come to the United Nations from the Moon." He expressed particular gratification that the plaque is inscribed: "We cam in peace for all mankind." "The words are few," he said, "but they spell out the common identity of all the inhabitants of this planet."
