Scope and content

"Mrs. Alan B. Shepard, Jr."
Louise Shepard, wife of U.S. Navy Commander Alan B. Shepard, Jr., has many of the same qualities that helped her husband become the first American in space. All of these qualities shine out as a result of Mrs. Shepard's inner warmth and serenity. The sacrifice of her husband's companionship during his absence on a tour of duty -- one which all Navy wives must make -- has never left Louise Shepard in a vacuum. Wherever a family is stationed, she quickly finds friends and useful, interesting activities. The Shepards have two daughters: Laura, 14, and Julie, 10.
