Scope and content
An express train leapt the rails and crashed at Barby, near Rugby, recently. The "miracle" crash came as the 10.35 a.m. Manchester-London express fouled the points. The engine hurtled off the track and plunged down a twelve-foot embankment. Seven of the ten corridor coaches piled up behind it.
But only the driver, Charles Simpson, was killed. He was trapped in the wreckage of his cabin. The fireman, Derek Nethercott, was badly scalded. Nineteen passengers were injured, but only one seriously. Men and women crawled through the shatter windows of the derailed coaches. Buses and ambulances arrived. Troops turned up from a nearby camp. Most of the passengers were taken by bus to Willoughby, about a mile down the line, and put on a special train to London.
Picture shows the crash scene from the air. The engine is on its side in the field and seven coaches are off the rails.
