Scope and content
Ethiopia has now started training adults to read and write, in order to overcome illiteracy. These Ethiopian women are studying in the alphabetization class in Addis Ababa, and around 20,000 voluntary teachers all over the country conduct these classes.
It will soon be a matter of course for them to read and write. These Ethiopian women attending the alphabetization centre in the 21st borough of Addis Ababa are learning quick. More than 20,000 voluntary teachers make all efforts in order to teach Ethiopian people how to read and write throughout the country. This refers to the rural areas above all.
Almost ten years have passed since the monarchial power in Ethiopia was overthrown on September 12th, 1974. However, the illiteracy rate amounted to 93 per cent, then. Early in April 1984, the 11th stage of a country-wide alphabetization campaign was started. As a result of this, the number of Ethiopians who could not read and write was reduced to 37.6 per cent. It is aimed to have fully overcome illiteracy in the capital of Addis Ababa not later than until the 10th anniversary of the Ethiopian revolution which is to be marked in September 1984. Until 1987, however, every boy and girl at the age of seven may attend a school.
