Scope and content
Netball is very much in the news these days with the inter-club, Mercantile and floodlit tournaments in progress and today we feature one of the 'veterans' of the game, Marion Öhlmus nee Hickey who is one of the best shooters in the country.
Marion started her netball career at the early age of 12 and soon found a place in the Methodist College team, which she captained in 1946-47.
When the Shamrocks Club was started in 1957, by her old school chum Cynthia Rasquinho-nee Ernst, Marion was the first to join up and since that time has represented the Club as shooter in all matches.
She was in the Shamrocks team which won the 1958/59 inter-club championships, and the Donovan Andree Memorial Gold Cup in 1959 and also played for her Club against the Crusaders on their first visit to Ceylon.
One of the best shooters at the time she earned representative honours when chosen to play for Ceylon in the unofficial Test against the Crusaders.
Marion who is married and has three children still finds the time to indulge in her favourite sport and despite the presence of several promising youngsters, still keeps her place in the Shamrocks first team.
It was only last night that she helped her team retain the Donovan Andree memorial Cup after beating the Convent of Our Lady of Victories, Moratuwa in the final.
Marion did not confine herself to netball, she played hockey, is a keen swimmer and also represented Methodist College at athletics.
