'Set Example to Rest of the World'
Pilgrims at Mahiyangana (picture on right) resting near the 145-foot Mahiyangana Chaitiya, which was ceremonially crowned with the 13-foot gold-coated pinnacle at 9.45 yesterday morning. From early yesterday there was an inflow of devotees into the sacred city from various parts of the country by special trains, buses and on foot. Several social organisations provided food to the devotees.
On Wednesday night the chaitiya was decorated with electric bulbs and there was an all-night bana preaching. At 9.30 yesterday morning when the pinnacle was raised to the top of the dagoba the maha sangha began “seth pirith”, which was continued till the pinnacle was laid.
Mr. Dudley Senanayake said before the ceremony that the restoration of the chaitiya was made possible by the message of the Buddha which made the Buddhists unite. He said the people should pray and hope that the achievement would give them the opportunity to set an example to the world.
Mr. C.P. de Silva, Leader of the House of Representatives, who represented the Government at the ceremony, said devout Buddhist had made it possible to restore the chaitiya.
