The twenty year old cyclist Lutz Hesslich (c.) from the Cottbus sports club captured the title of an International Winter Track Champion in cycle sprinting already for the second time during the 27th Berlin Track Racing Winter Season in the Werner Seelenbinder Hall. Lutz Hesslich was chosen "GDR Sportsman of January 1979"by the "Sportecho" newspaper. - 58,000 spectators watched the races on the 18 cycling evenings during the 27th Berlin Track Racing Winter Season. 135 cyclists of the GDR's top class met with 62 guests from Bulgaria, USSR, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Great Britain, Switzerland, Austria and Japan. 14 new track records were established, a great deal of them by the 13 world champions of the last year from GDR.
