Scope and content
A number of passengers were reporters killed and many injured when an excursion train jumped the rails at Milton Bridge near Steventon, 10 miles south of Oxford and 45 miles northwest of London. The train, a Sunday special, was bound for London from Treherbert, with about 290 passengers aboard. It derailed while switching from one track to another and two of the train's ten coaches telescoped into twisted wreckage. Four others careered off the track. More than 50 injured were taken to the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford and others were diverted to the Battle Hospital. Reading. The photo shows — a general view of crazily-angled, toppled coaches, with a group of rescuers (left).
