Paris: The scene of destruction and havoc at Fismes, near Rheims, as coaches and wreckages of the Paris-Luxemburg express litter the permanent way. At least seven passengers died in the crash which happened when the train left the rails travelling at 50m.p.h. Ambulances from neighbouring towns rushed to the spot and emergency first-aid stations were set up beside the lines. It is estimated that 130 persons are injured - 30 of them seriously. Telephone poles were moved downs by the express which was travelling from Paris, making communication difficult. The train was crowded with holidaymakers.
