Scope and content

This dramatic picture shows what happened when the biggest victim of recent gales, the 6,272-ton liner Venus, went aground. The liner grounded in Plymouth Sound during a 60 m.p.h. gale. Only the crew of 160 were on board.
Five tugs tried to refloat her. One of the tugs was herself swept on to the rocks and another was diverted to tow her off. That was when it was decided to bring off those of the crew who were not needed for navigational purposes. They came ashore in the ship's lifeboats. Many of them were women—stewardesses, nurses, laundresses.
