Scope and content
At left is a picture taken by an RAF Shackleton search aircraft of the Liberian tanker "World Sky", breaking up on the rocks at Kuria Muria Bay, south Arabia. First news of the disaster came when five survivors struggled ashore and telephoned a message from an oil drilling point on the rugged Oman coast to the RAF airfield at Salalah. Within three-quarters of an hour of a message being received by the RAF at Aden the Shackleton was dispatched to Kuria Muria Bay and another travelling from Masira Island to Bahrain diverted to the scene. One Shackleton dropped medical and emergency rescue kits to the stranded survivors. Other aircraft located three lifeboats and twelve more survivors who had landed in Sauquira Bay. One lifeboat, with 18 crew on board, is still missing.
