Scope and content

Fearless Abyssinian Woman Prepares to Fight Italy.

Ethiopia's Joan of Arc is Voyzero (Madam) Abeebech, a wealthy vivacious young matron wife of an Army officer who is now serving at the Gondar frontier. Voyzero Abebech, is a well known figure in Addis Ababa, being the leader of the first and only women's club in the country, which has a membership of 400. These women are fearless. They mean to fight beside their men-folk in case of hostilities with Italy, and are therefore fitting themselves out with military uniforms and equipping themselves with guns. Voyzero Abebech inspires her followers with her tireless energy in working for the continued independence of their Empire.

O.P.S. Voyzero Abebech, photographed as she practices with a man-sized revolver, in readiness for possible conflict with Italy. Note the tattooed cross on her right hand. An Ethiopian would see nothing ironic in the juxtaposition of cross and revolver. Ethiopian women are looking upon their participation in the defence of their independence as a sacred crusade.
