It's heaving flanks covered with a fine layer of snow, a stallion gallops through the white fields of outer Moscow in training for England's biggest race, the "Grand National". This horse —"Griffin"— is one of three steeplechasers with which the Russians hope to win a record £23,000 prize money in the race, which takes place at Aintree in March. It is ridden in this picture by jockey Ivan Abdeyev. Mr. Philip Nikitavich Pika, an official with the permanent Russian trade delegation in London, has become the owner—on paper at any rate!— of the horses. A British racing rule governing the National says horses must be privately owned. In Russia all racehorses belong to the state.
