James Coburn could never have been a romantic star in the days when screen lovers had to be handsome almost to the point of being beautiful. Those days were followed by the era of the rugged,... kooky, careless types. Today's women want a movie lover who exudes danger.
Enter James Coburn. In his latest starring role in "Our Man Flint," a 20th Century-fox release in CinemaScope and Deluxe Color opening tomorrow at the Savoy Theatre, Coburn fits the new requirements to the letter. He is six foot-two and whip thin, wears tight fitting black clothes, drives a black Maserati, combs his hair so close it seems painted on his skull, and in general presents an image of excitement and danger.
As 20th Century-Fox's choice for the sexiest, most resourceful spy of all time. Derek Flint, he plays a character who makes James Bond seem almost colourless and incompetent. The scropt describes him as "fearless, athletic, ruthless, evil — a tiger and a superman."
It's a real challenge for an actor who has killed, injurs, knifed gangsters and lived in sweat-stained jeans — an actor who couldn't get the correct time of day from our top movie makers not too long ago.
