Ship breaks back on Goodwins. Crew in wild scramble to safety.
With a loud roar like a mighty explosion, the Greek steamer 'Ira' broke her back within four hours of running aground on the treacherous Goodwins Sands, graveyard of ships, off Britain's south-east coast. The entire crew of 34, some of whom were drifting around in the ship's boats, were rescued by the Walmar lifeboat and landed at Dal, Kent. Some of the Greek seamen had been injured in a wild scramble aboard the wrecked ship; a number of the men leaped into the lifeboat making it difficult for the boat to remain alongside.
The 'Ira' — formerly the American Liberty ship 'Harry Percy' — was on her way to Antwerp, Belgium, with 4,000 tons of coal from America. It was her first voyage under the Greek flag.
