"Yemen's Ruler, Imam Ahmad, Abdicates"
Aden, Sunday.
Imam Ahmed, 61-year-old ruler of the Yemen has abdicated in favour of his brother following a clash between his bodyguards and Army forces, reports reaching here said yesterday.
The new Imam (King) is the Emir Seif el Islam, Abdullah, 43 Foreign Minister and a former Premier of the remote Red Sea kingdom of Britain's Aden protectorate.
Imam Ahmed came to the throne in 1948. The previous Imam was assassinated and Imam Ahmed's accession followed a month of civil war.
The report said the current dispute between the Army and the Imam began when soldiers collecting taxes at Hoban, near the city of Taez, were attacked by tribesmen and three were killed.
The Army demanded permission to wipe out the tribes responsible. But the King sent a battalion to Hoban to maintain security and skirmishes followed.
Later the Army clashed with the Imam's bodyguard at Taez, then demanded the Iman's abdication.
