Présentation du contenu
"Sportswoman of the Week" is a Netball player, Hema Ranasinghe, who led Dia S.C. team to victory in Mercantile knock-out championships last week and retain the coveted Xavier Roche Memorial Cup for the third successive year.
Twenty-four-year-old Hema has been playing for Dia since 1958, when they made their debut in Mercantile Netball.
A product of Alubomulla Senior School, Panadura, Hema is a versatile player, excelling in any position she is asked to play.
A quiet unassumingly girl, she has been a popular player in Mercantile tournaments.
In 1958 when Dia made thei debut in the Mercantile knock-out competition, she led the side very tactfully, and did well to finish runners-up to Air Ceylon.
In 1959, Hema was again elected Captain of the Dia team, and led the team with success in both Mercantile tournaments, losing to Hentley's in the semi-final round in the League and being runners-up to Air Ceylon again in the knock-out tournament.
In 1960, Dia won their first championships — the Mercantile knock-out title beating Air Ceylon, and for Hema it was a proud day, for she was again Captain. In the League too Dia reached the final but lost to Air Ceylon in the final.
Last year, having captained the side of the League, and finishing runners-up to BCC, Hema laid down the reins of leadership in the knock-out competition, and played under Sophia Marasinghe who was elected captain, and Dia went on to win the Xavier Roche Memorial Cup for the 2nd year.
This year, Hema, who has never missed a competition game for Dia, was again entrusted with the the captaincy in the knock-out competition and Dia completed the hat-trick.
Hema was a in a very large measure contributed towards Dia's success in Netball. She readily accepts correction and as a player never relaxes a moment, and takes victory of defeat with a smile.
According to Hema, the success of Dia in netball, has been due to the keenness shown by the members of the team and the encouragement given by the Managing Director, Mr. W. M. Fonseka.
Hema, has no immediate plans for the future—"I will play for Dia as long as I am working and able to play," she says.
As an attacking centre, she could be classes as one of the best players in this position in the country. She is reliable, hard working and never loses concentration while on the court and does not appear to be affected by what the spectators comment.
