Helicopter Recovery — A helicopter from the recovery ship USS Lake Champlain hoists astronaut Alan B. Shepard Jr. aboard as his Project Mercury capsule cntinues to float in the Atlantic. The spacecraft was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, May 05 and landed 302 miles (486 kilometers) down the Atlantic Test Range; it reached an altitude of 115 miles (185 kilometers). Project physicians reported the astronaut in excellent condition after his 15-minute flight.
