Scope and content
Eleven ashen faced men, showing signs of their agonizing ordeal were brought safely to the surface at Peine, Germany after spending 13 days trapped 187 feet underground in the Mathilde Iron ore mine.
The first man to emerge — pictured descending steps on the left — was Heinz Kull, a 51-year-old miner. The last was Bernhard Wolter, 28, who was brought up 56 minutes later.
The 10 miners and an electrician were brought to the surface in a torpedo shaped steel capsule.
