War-bride ship collide with cattle steamer in Mersey — cattle flounder in river.
Three hours after the war-bride ship "Empire Brent" (13,595 tons) had been in collision with the cattle steamer "Stormont" (1,031 tons), which capsized, cattle and horses were still swimming or drowning in the River Mersey off Liverpool.
Nine hundred brides and children of Canadian Servicemen were onboard the "Empire Brent", which had just left Liverpool for Halifax. The collision with the "Stormont", bound for the Manchester ship Canal, occurred when visibility was poor due to mist. The seventeen members of the crew and three cattlemen who had stayed with their charges until the last minute, narrowly escaped with their lives. The "Empire Brent" had to put back to Liverpool with damage to her bows.
