Royal Visit to Ethiopia.
His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester seen enjoying a joke with his royal host, Haile Selassie, Emperor of Ethiopia, in the Imperial Palace at Addis Ababa during his recent five-day royal visit to Ethiopia.
The Duke of Gloucester accompanied by the Duchess was paying his first visit to Ethiopia since he attended the Coronation of the Emperor in 1930. The Royal visitors were warmly welcomed by large crowds of Ethiopians who gathered along the route when the Duke and Duchess drove with members of the Ethiopian Royal Family to the Imperial Palace to meet their hosts, Emperor Haile Selassie and Empress Manen.
During their visit, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were guests of honour at a Banquet in the Imperial Palace. Among other engagements the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester visited colleges, schools, hospitals and places of interest. The Duke of Gloucester laid a wreath on the Liberation Monument in Addis Ababa, visited the Ethiopian Parliament, and made a brief tour of the city's University college.
The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester closed their successful visit to Ethiopia by visiting Gondar, the ancient Ethiopian capital, and touring the mountainous areas of northern Ethiopia to see some of the wild life of the kingdom.
