"Europe Acclaims British Cyclist"
Continental congratulations for Britain's Tommy Simpson, the first Briton, to win the 350-mile Bordeaux to Paris cycle race since 1891.
Simpson, who home is in Doncaster, England, has invaded the European cycling circuit with considerable success. In 1962 he became the first man from Britain to wear the "yellow jersey", symbol of the fastest daily performance in Europe's leading road race, the Tour de France.
Now his startling success in the world's longst non-stop cycle race has brought acclaim from the Knowledgeable French enthusiasts, who cheered him over the winning line in the Parc Des Princes stadium in Paris.
Simpson has now to decide if he will compete in this year's Tour de France. He may miss this classic cycle race in favour of the World Cycling Championships.
Whichever event Simpson enters for, he has enhanced his chances with this brilliant win in France.
